Building a nationwide platform where transparency becomes the competitive advantage.

The best digital products don’t simply solve technical problems. They solve business problems.

When Mustafa approached AETHER, his vision wasn’t to launch another locksmith website. The Netherlands already has thousands of those. His ambition was far greater: create the country’s first nationwide locksmith platform where customers always know what to expect before they book a service.

For years, the locksmith industry has suffered from the same reputation. Hidden fees. Unclear pricing. Uncertainty. Customers often contact a locksmith without knowing what the final invoice will look like, while honest professionals struggle to distinguish themselves from competitors who compete on misleading promises instead of genuine value.

Rather than accepting those industry standards, we decided to challenge them.

Slotenmaker Thuisbezorgd was designed as a digital platform where transparency becomes the foundation of trust. Customers can quickly request a locksmith anywhere in the Netherlands, receive clear pricing from the start and feel confident they’re working with a professional who values honesty as much as craftsmanship.

The Challenge

Every successful digital product starts by asking a simple question.

What is the real problem?

In this case, the problem wasn’t that the client needed a more modern website.

The real challenge was that customers no longer trusted the market itself.

Most locksmith websites look remarkably similar. They promise fast service, claim to be available 24/7 and often hide pricing until the work has already been completed. Instead of helping customers make confident decisions, these websites create uncertainty at exactly the moment people need clarity the most.

At the same time, many independent locksmiths face the opposite challenge. Despite offering excellent service, they struggle to generate consistent work because they compete against hundreds of similar businesses with little opportunity to differentiate themselves.

The opportunity wasn’t to build another website.

The opportunity was to build infrastructure.

A platform capable of connecting customers and locksmiths through one transparent digital experience.

Rethinking the Customer Journey

Every decision throughout the project was guided by a simple principle.

People don’t trust businesses because they have beautiful websites.

They trust businesses because every interaction reduces uncertainty.

That philosophy aligns closely with the thinking explored in our Transmission Why Beautiful Websites Still Fail: UX Architecture, where we explain why user experience begins long before visual design.

Instead of designing pages around marketing messages, we designed them around customer questions.

Can I trust this company?

How quickly can someone help me?

What will it cost?

How does the process work?

Every page, every section and every interaction exists to answer those questions as quickly as possible.

By reducing uncertainty throughout the journey, the website creates confidence before asking visitors to take action.

From Website to Digital Platform

Although visitors experience a modern website, the project extends far beyond what most people would consider a traditional business website.

Slotenmaker Thuisbezorgd was conceived as a nationwide digital platform that supports both sides of the marketplace.

Customers can request assistance by phone or WhatsApp, while registered locksmiths receive new assignments through a dedicated platform built around operational efficiency and long-term scalability.

This approach transforms the website from a marketing asset into business infrastructure.

It doesn’t simply attract visitors.

It actively supports how the organisation operates every single day.

Building digital infrastructure rather than isolated websites is one of the reasons we specialise in Custom Websites. Every business operates differently, and the technology behind it should reflect that reality instead of forcing the organisation into the limitations of a generic template.

Designing for Trust

From the very beginning, trust became the guiding principle behind every design decision.

During our first conversations, the client mentioned that platforms like Thuisbezorgd.nl immediately communicate reliability and simplicity. Rather than recreating that visual identity, we analysed what makes those platforms feel so intuitive in the first place.

People rarely think about typography, spacing or visual hierarchy consciously. Yet these elements shape how trustworthy a digital experience feels within seconds.

Our goal wasn’t to imitate an existing platform.

It was to create a familiar experience that still felt entirely authentic to Slotenmaker Thuisbezorgd.

Every layout was designed around clarity. Every navigation choice was made to reduce cognitive load. Every visual element exists because it helps visitors move through the platform with confidence.

This philosophy closely reflects the principles explored in our Transmission The Psychology Behind High-Converting Websites, where we explain why reducing mental effort almost always leads to better user experiences and stronger conversion rates.

Architecture Before Aesthetics

One of the most common misconceptions about web design is that beautiful interfaces automatically create successful websites.

In reality, the opposite is often true.

Strong digital products are built on clear architecture long before colours, animations or visuals are introduced.

Before designing individual pages, we first mapped the complete customer journey.

How do visitors arrive on the platform?

Which questions do they have?

What information do they need before requesting a locksmith?

Which actions should feel effortless?

Only after those questions had been answered did the visual design begin.

That strategic foundation ensures the interface supports the business rather than simply decorating it.

Building Authority Through Knowledge

Most businesses treat their blog as an SEO requirement.

We approached it differently.

Customers looking for a locksmith often have urgent questions before they are ready to contact anyone.

What should I do if my key breaks inside the lock?

Can a lock still be repaired?

How much does replacing a cylinder actually cost?

Instead of forcing visitors to search elsewhere for answers, we designed an extensive knowledge centre that helps customers understand their situation before making a decision.

The knowledge centre therefore became much more than a collection of articles.

It became an extension of the customer experience.

By educating visitors first, the platform naturally builds credibility while strengthening long-term organic visibility.

This content-first approach forms an important part of our SEO & AIO services, where search visibility is created through expertise, semantic structure and genuinely valuable information instead of publishing content for search engines alone.

Developing for Long-Term Growth

Behind every polished interface sits a technical foundation that determines how the platform performs over time.

The website was developed using WordPress together with Divi, while deliberately avoiding unnecessary third-party plugins wherever possible.

Every additional dependency introduces potential security risks, maintenance challenges and performance bottlenecks.

Whenever native functionality could achieve the same result, we chose the simpler and more sustainable solution.

One of the most interesting technical challenges emerged while developing the knowledge centre.

Divi doesn’t provide a native category filtering system capable of delivering the browsing experience we envisioned.

Rather than introducing heavy filtering plugins or custom frameworks, we engineered a native solution that dynamically displays different blog modules based on the selected category.

The result is a fast, responsive browsing experience that remains lightweight, maintainable and future-proof.

Performance isn’t simply a technical metric. It directly influences user satisfaction, search visibility and conversion. We explore this relationship further in Why Website Speed Matters More Than Ever.

A Platform Designed to Evolve

Perhaps the biggest achievement of this project isn’t what visitors see today.

It’s what the platform enables tomorrow.

New cities can be added.

Additional services can be introduced.

More locksmiths can join the network.

The knowledge centre can continue expanding.

Marketing campaigns can scale without requiring a complete rebuild.

Every important architectural decision was made with future growth in mind.

Rather than creating a website that solves today’s challenges, we built a platform capable of supporting tomorrow’s ambitions.

That is ultimately what custom development should achieve, and why we believe businesses with long-term ambitions benefit far more from custom websites than from one-size-fits-all solutions.
